Dorchester Students Help Build Family Foundation with Habitat for Humanity

Palmetto Youth Leadership (PYL) joined with Dorchester Habitat for Humanity on November 12, 2009 to participate in an outreach project for service learning, teaching teens to give back to the community.

Thirty-three high school juniors representing all public and private high schools in Dorchester County joined PYL staff (Julianne DiCicco-Wiles, Kimere Corthell, Mary Elizabeth Purdue) and Dorchester Alcohol and Drug Commission Board of Directors member Mike Montei to lay the foundation for two homes in St. George and to clear a lot for a future home.

One youth eloquently noted of the experience: “We laid the foundation of a home and metaphorically it’s the foundation for their family starting a new life.”
